Making the Cut: Choosing the Style of Engagement Ring That Fits Your Personality

by Diana Jewelers of Liverpool
Navigating the world of engagement rings can be confusing, so going into the store as informed as possible about what you (or your future bride!) want in terms of not only the cut, clarity, and color of a diamond, but also the style and story behind it, can make things a lot easier when looking at types of engagement rings. There are countless engagement ring styles out there, so we at Diana Jewelers of Liverpool, NY have broken down the basics to help you make the perfect selection!

If your fiancée prefers something a bit more unique, the oval-shaped Marquise cut, ending in points at the top and bottom of the diamond, is right for her. If she'd like an oval shape with more rounded edges, then the Cushion cut (sometimes called the Pillow Cut) is more ideal.

The Origins of the Engagement Ring

by Diana Jewelers of Liverpool
The Origins of the Engagement Ring The engagement ring often appears to be a tradition as old as mankind itself. It's a sign of love that every woman expects to receive and every man expects to give. Whether it's diamond encrusted or a simple gold band, the engagement ring is a symbol that is as much a part of romance as the rose.

Where did it come from, though? The ring is a simple enough thing. Why, and where, did it become so closely entwined with the engagement?

A Romantic Tale

by Betsy
One of the most rewarding parts of the job is having wonderful clients. And we understand when they come with their assortment of jewelry to be redesigned; it holds more meaning to all of us because it isn’t only about the new ring. It is the story of combining the memories in all the pieces into one piece. And odds are that no matter what the design, those memories carry with them every emotion surrounding life’s events; marriage, children, careers, parents, grandchildren. Simply put; life’s ups and downs.
It was our privilege to create a design for one of our favorite people because she is so special to our hearts. Her redesign story is simple: create something new from my engagement ring, anniversary ring and perhaps a pair of earrings. Each piece...

Remount Extraordinaire

by Betsy
A client came in with an idea and some rings inherited from her Mother. She wanted to design a new ring in an antique style that she would wear at her daughter's wedding. The center diamond was from her Dad and the side diamonds , all marquise shape, were from another of her Mom's rings.

We began with an idea and coupled with craftsmanship, the end result was stunning. If you look at the pictures:

Remount Extraordinaire palladino melinda 2-99She brought in a black onyx ring to indicate her style. Initially she wanted black onyx in this ring, but d...

Diamonds on Engagement Rings

by Betsy
Diamonds on Engagement Rings Diamonds have long been associated with engagement rings. It is suggested that the durability of this stone made it the fitting symbol of love. Since diamonds are the strongest and hardest mineral known to man, it became the symbol of a couple's unbreakable bond. Ancient Greeks believed that the diamond's spark was the reflection of the burning flame of everlasting love.

Historically, couple rings were either strands of braided grass, hair, a single silver or gold wire. Diamonds were not the only stone to be featured in the engagement ring. Sapphires, rubies, and e...

A Pendant and a Ring

by Betsy
The wish: To bring a client’s design to life using the diamonds from her first engagement ring and creating the ring and pendant of her dreams.

The added bonus: Alter the original ring setting to accept a smaller center princess cut and adding blue sapphires where the side diamonds were.

The plan:

-Pendant: This lovely lady drew a sketch using a large princess cut as the center and positioning the trapezoid side diamonds to show off the shape of the center. A simple white gold chain, attached with jump rings on the side, completes this simple and elegant design that can be worn every day.

-Ring: Using the original ring mounting, our incredible custom designer adjusted the size of ...

The Dream Ring

by Betsy
The dream ring:

Client brought in a picture of the engagement ring she loved. After measuring her diamonds, we decided the stone sizes would work with her dream ring if we used the round diamonds from both the wedding band and engagement ring.

The matching diamond band:

The balance of the side diamonds were round and tapered baguettes and were set in a custom ring alternating the baguette and round diamonds, which lines up perfectly beneath the center head of the new engagement ring.

The client also had a small pinkie ring which had worn prongs and thin band plus slightly larger inherited diamonds. The result? A beautiful open scroll curved band with an added curved swirl bezel on the top for the center ...

Two into One - Combining Mom's and Mother In Law's Rings

by Betsy
We love creating new styles for our clients. Often the best part is hearing the stories behind the jewelry and why it is so important to maintain the history. This is one of my favorites:

Two rings given to one woman; one from her mother and the second from her mother-in-law. The rings were similar in style but different enough to tell them apart.

The wish? To create a ring with her mother’s cluster head in the center and use all the diamonds from her mother-in-law’s ring in the rest of the ring.

The idea? After examining different settings and patterns, she decided on a classic design . By removing the yellow gold shank on her mother’s ring and the diamonds from the other ring we created a whole new loo...

25th Anniversary Ring

by Betsy
The wish: To create a ring using this client’s original diamond and diamonds inherited from family that mirrors the original engagement ring and uses all the stones. This client had her original engagement ring ( pictured with wedding ring at top), an inherited solitaire diamond ring and a diamond, also inherited, from a diamond and ruby ring. Both are pictured below original set.
We created her new ring by utilizing the same beautiful design of her original ring, making the mold to exactly match the sizes of the diamonds from all rings. Her original diamond and the diamond from the ruby and diamond ring matched in size, making them perfect as the larger side diamonds in this design. The diamond from the solitaire became the new center diamond...

Diamond Cut - The Most Important of the 4C's

by Betsy
Diamond Cut - The Most Important of the 4Cs DiamondCut1-7
A diamond cut is one of the “4Cs” used to determine a diamond's value. A diamond uses specific geometric proportions to shape a diamond before polishing. When a diamond is cut, facets are created. These facets determine the shape and appearance of the diamond. The cut of the diamond greatly determines the diamond's brilliance. When the cut is done poorly, the diamond becomes less luminous. Although a diamond may grade well using other determiners, a poor cut can result in a dull, muted effect.

The cut of ...

Engagement Rings--From Ancient Egypt To 21st Century America

by Betsy
Engagement Rings--From Ancient Egypt To 21st Century America EngagementRingModern-92Modern engagement rings have a long and intricate history, dating all the way back to the time of the ancient Egyptians. In fact, mummies have been unearthed wearing metal bands around the third finger of the left hand. In ancient times, it was believed that a vein attached to this finger ran directly to the heart. Similarly, the ancient Romans believed that an important nerve ran from the third finger to the heart, ...

A Syracuse area client came to us with her original engagement ring and wedding band set. She asked us to set her diamond into a stunning new mounting.

We then soldered her old set together to create a single ring, installed prongs, and added a single large blue stone, creating a lovely right-hand ring for her to wear for years to come.
